Author Resource Page

Author Resources

The success of JDR and our research community relies on the publication of high quality research relevant to all aspects of the lactation sciences. We are glad to welcome you as a JDR author, and we thank you for your contribution!

JDR is a hybrid Journal
We publish standard articles completely free, without any page charges or submission fees. This includes any online colour images, although there is a fee for including colour images in the hardcopy Journal. Authors also have the option of publishing Gold Open  Access. The standard fee for this is £1870. However, if your Institution has a Read and Publish Agreement with Cambridge University Press this fee will either be waived completely or discounted, depending on the individual Agreement. You can check your eligibility for free Gold Open Access here

We publish original research in two formats: Full Paper or Research Communication

Both categories have equal merit and equivalent indexing and we encourage you to choose the most appropriate for your research. We also welcome submissions of Research Reflections, which are short reviews, opinion papers or dataless papers proposing a testable hypothesis.

We also publish a variety of articles intended to add "impact beyond data"
Reviews and Editorials are published by invitation only (you are welcome to propose a topic) and we also publish a range of other submitted short articles (Research Reflections, Invited Reviews and Editorials, Special Issue manuscripts, Book Reviews, Letters to the Editor, Foreign Language Abstracts, PhD Thesis Abstracts)

There are four sections to this page:
  • Submitting a new Full Paper or Research Communication manuscript
  • Tracking and updating your submitted Manuscript
  • Progressing your Accepted Manuscript
  • Submitting another type of article

Please be sure to refer to the correct section and use the correct form.

All of the materials that you will need as an author can be accessed from here without logging in, apart from your manuscript. To maintain confidentiality, manuscripts themselves can only be accessed from individual accounts. Once your submitted manuscript is online, you can access it ONLY from your "My Account" menu. You must be logged in to do this. If you do not already have an account, you can create one by joining JDR, or we will create one for you when you submit for the first time.

Submitting a new Manuscript

Thank you for considering JDR for the publication of your research. For guidance on our research scope and other important information about publishing in JDR, please first visit our Manuscript Preparation page. We strongly recommend that you do this before preparing or submitting your paper, even if you have published with us before. To increase your chances of publication, it is very important that you read our Policy Statement, which gives clear guidance on our preferred types of manuscript.

If you have read the guidance page and are ready to submit, please go to our Manuscript Submission page

To ensure that manuscripts are as concise as possible, we strongly encourage the use of Supplementary Files. You can submit your Supplementary File here

Tracking and updating your submitted Manuscript

Your submitted manuscript has its own page, which you can access from your My Account menu. If you have problems doing this, there is help here.

All submitted manuscripts go through our Peer Review Process, which is described here. To view the progress of your manuscript through Peer Review, go to your manuscript page.

If your manuscript has been Peer Reviewed and you have been asked to revise it, you must do this using the Submit your Revision form. This form must ONLY be used when we have asked you to revise a submitted manuscript. If you are wishing to resubmit a manuscript that was previously rejected, this is a new submission and you MUST use the Submit your Manuscript form (above)

Progressing your accepted Manuscript

Congratulations! Once your manuscript has been accepted for publication, we send it to Cambridge University Press. Once copy-editing is complete you will receive the Proof Copy from CUP as a PDF file. You are asked to correct the Proof within three days if possible. Instructions will be sent with the Proof and there is further online guidance here.

You MUST submit your corrected Proof using the  Submit your Proof form. This form must ONLY be used for proofs

Copyright. Before your article can be published you must complete the appropriate Copyright Form and either send it directly to CUP, or else add it to your Proof Submission. The standard copyright form can be downloaded here. Other forms (if your employer owns the copyright for instance) are available from the CUP website at this link:
